My Position on Cell Towers
My Opposition to the Proposed Cell Tower in Manchester
I strongly oppose the proposed cell tower installation at the current location in Manchester. While I understand the importance of modern telecommunication infrastructure, the potential drawbacks of this particular location outweigh its benefits.
First and foremost, the visual impact of a cell tower in our neighborhood cannot be understated. Our community prides itself on its scenic beauty and cohesive aesthetic, and introducing a towering structure would significantly compromise the area's visual appeal. This concern extends beyond personal preferences; property values may be negatively affected, impacting homeowners and local businesses.
Moreover, the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to radiofrequency radiation emitted by cell towers greatly concern me. Particularly because of its close proximity to a local school, homeowners, a recreational facility many of our children frequent, and the rail trail. While scientific studies on this topic may yield varying results, the uncertainty raises legitimate worries among community members.
Additionally, a growing body of evidence suggests that property values may decrease in proximity to cell towers. Homebuyers are becoming increasingly wary of residing near these structures due to health concerns and aesthetic considerations. As a result, property owners in the vicinity of the proposed tower may face financial repercussions, affecting the overall economic health of our community.
We need to find ways to proactively work with engineers and local experts to better accommodate the placement of cell towers in our town for public health and minimize their visual impact while doing our best to maximize their utilization and effectiveness.
I recognize the importance of improved connectivity and telecommunication infrastructure. The necessity for access to cellular data and phone connectivity is vital for first responders, the ability for visitors to access information about our local businesses and recreational activities, and for those who struggle to gain access to high-speed internet, accessing a strong cellular connection is vital to providing equitable access to the world.
However, the drawbacks associated with the proposed cell tower installation at this specific location in our community are too significant to overlook. The Selectboard and Planning Commission must work together to explore alternative locations that would have minimal impact on our community's visual appeal, property values, and overall well-being.
