A Call to Action for Manchester's Housing Crisis

Every 30 days, another family faces the harrowing reality of losing their home. This isn't a distant issue; it's happening right here, right now, in our backyard. Yet, amidst this crisis, there's a glimmer of hope. Our work as a Selectboard has the power to unite our community in acknowledging the devastating impact of the housing crisis. Manchester stands at a critical juncture. The severe shortage of housing options threatens to unravel the very fabric of our thriving community in Vermont. We need more voices willing to stand up and declare, "Yes, we can, and we must do more to protect the most vulnerable in our town." I'm asking you to help me do just that.

Recently, I presented a proposal to establish a Housing and Community Development Committee to the Selectboard. With the disbandment of the Housing Task Force, there's no time to waste. The draft proposal received overwhelming support from fellow board members, local business owners, community activists, home builders, and the Manchester Business Association.

What will this committee do to tackle the housing crisis? If approved, it will address housing needs, breathe life into neighborhoods, and drive economic development. The committee, a product of strategic collaboration between the Town of Manchester and community advocacy groups, will spearhead tangible projects. It will provide comprehensive resources to aid residents and employers in navigating housing challenges within our community. Furthermore, it will actively seek financial resources to bolster sustainable and affordable housing development, leveraging local, state, and federal programs. Our goal: to cultivate a town where every resident has equitable access to safe, affordable housing and opportunities for social and economic advancement. Your involvement and support are crucial in this endeavor.

Who will be on this committee? It must include representatives from the town's existing boards, commissions, and committees. I've proposed a diverse composition of seven members, ensuring different perspectives from our community are represented. With key stakeholders in one room, including representatives from the Selectboard, Planning Commission, and Development Review Board, we aim to minimize miscommunication and maximize impact.

Housing isn't just about shelter; it's the bedrock of thriving communities. It's about creating environments where people can thrive, feel secure, and build better lives. As your elected advocate, I'm committed to fulfilling that promise. But I can't do it alone. I need your help. Join us in person or on Zoom at our Selectboard meetings, and let your voice be heard as we work toward solutions. Your input is invaluable as we navigate this crisis together. You can even join me at one of my monthly coffee hours. Let's shape our future together, ensuring every member of our community has a place to call home and a chance to thrive.
