Our First Pride Month Proclamation

June is an incredibly special month for me as we celebrate Pride Month and the vibrant spirit of the LGBTQIA+ community! I’m thrilled to announce that the Town of Manchester has unanimously passed its 1st Pride Month Proclamation, officially declaring June 2024 as Pride Month to show our unwavering support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

In a fantastic show of solidarity, the Selectboard has also encouraged residents and businesses in Manchester to fly the Pride Rainbow Flag throughout the month of June. To support this initiative, my husband and I have donated 200 Pride flags, which residents can pick up for free at the Manchester Visitor Center. I’ll share the details once the flags are available.

Manchester, Vermont’s 1st (ever) Pride Proclamation

Growing up in Manchester, I rarely saw visible LGBTQIA+ members, making it difficult to find my own identity. I spent years at MEMS and BBA feeling out of place until I met my husband nearly 20 years ago after graduating from UVM. As a parent and member of the Manchester Selectboard, I understand the critical importance of representation for younger generations. When young people see others who share their experiences, they are empowered to live authentically without fear.

My family believes in the power of acceptance through visibility. By increasing our visibility and recognition, we can foster acceptance and create a community where everyone feels safe and valued. This Pride Month, it’s vital to remember that the LGBTQIA+ community needs allies more than ever. Together, we can build a supportive and inclusive environment for all.
